The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 demand adequate precautions; HSG85 codifies proving dead as one of them; every competent electrician does it. Yet the method — two-pole testing with the door open, in PPE — has barely changed in forty years. BSEN 50110:2023 opens a new path: permanent, supervisory-verified Absence of Voltage Testing with the panel closed. This session examines the engineering principles behind direct-contact AVTs, how they differ from capacitive voltage indicators, and what they mean for machine builders designing safe, compliant switchgear today.
